Yellow Parrot

Native to the coasts of Mexico, The Yellow headed Amazon parrot, sometimes called the yellow parrot for short, has been gaining increasing popularity in recent years.  The yellow parrot is known this way because of its strikingly bright yellow head.  These birds usually have a bright green body, almost neon, and a bright red spot on each of their wings.  In addition to Mexico, these birds have also been known to make their home further south, in countries like Honduras, Belize, and Guatemala.  The Yellow Amazon parrot have not had a smooth past.

Since their preferred environment consists of places like the tropics, savannahs, mangrove swamps, or land that has been cultivated with lots of trees in which these parrots can build their nests, they are just another species to be affected by deforestation.  Not only have the Yellow Amazon parrot been ran out of their natural habitat, but they have also been subjected to illegal trade and poaching.  All these actions have lead to the endangerment of these feathery creatures and to the loss of their natural homes.
Throughout this misfortunate ordeal, the Yellow headed Amazon parrot has found its way into our homes and our hearts.  These birds have become rather popular as pets and are easily attainable.  They do carry with them a pretty hefty price tag however.

Despite its expense, the yellow parrot has become one of the most popular species sought after.  These birds are extremely vocal due to their high range of vocal abilities.  The Yellow headed Amazon parrot is closely linked to the African Grey parrot which is known to posses the most advanced speaking ability in the world of parrots.  With their gorgeous bright colors and their impressive talking ability, these parrots are truly a gem.  Parrots are products of nature, and just like anything in nature, they may not always behave as predicted.  Talking is one such example.  There are instances when for one reason or another your yellow nape parrot just will not talk.  Others on the other hand, may develop some of the most intelligent sounding speech imaginable.

The Yellow Amazon parrot will no doubt bring a lot of joy to its owner.  These birds are very active and love to play.  They are also very smart and can even be extremely funny.  These birds love attention.  So when you are ready to interact with them, be ready for noise and lots of movement.  Although the yellow parrot is considered to be the loudest parrot, there are things you can do to downplay unnecessary screeching.  The noise can be replaces with human words and phrases.  All you need is a little patience and some confidence in yourself as well as in your parrot.

These parrots require a lot of movement for their wellbeing, for this reason an aviary would suit them best.  This is not a strict requirement however.  Parrots do very well indoors and get used to cages with incredible ease.  As long as you bird gets some decent exercise everyday, it can live and thrive in a variety of arrangements.  Because of their high intellect and inquisitive nature, these parrots love to listen and learn.  Therefore teaching and training them can be an interactive and rewarding process.  These birds are highly tamable, just as long as their needs are respected.  Being as though they are rather large in size, they have a tendency to knock over or destroy any items in their path.  For this reason, they need to be placed in an environment where they can gnaw on things, and branches to pick, and jump on.  There are various toys on the market today which can help tame these parrots’ hyper nature.

The size of these parrots is about fifteen inches in length.  The females run a little bit smaller.  The Yellow headed Amazon parrots have a very pronounced hooked beak which they use to crack hard shells of nuts and seeds.  They also use the beak to explore the environment around them by using it to hook onto branches and to climb.  Besides their beaks, these parrots’ feet are another very handy climbing tool.  The yellow parrot has a total of four toes on each one of its feet.  Two of the toes are facing forward, and two aim towards the back.  This ingenuous design makes grasping anything a piece of cake.  It is like having four opposable thumbs.  These parrots will hold food with their feet while feeding themselves.

In nature, the Yellow Amazon parrots or yellow nape parrot consume a large variety of berries, fruits, blossoms, nuts, and leaf buds.  They are strict vegetarians and thrive on their nutrient dense tropical crops such as corn.  When caring for these birds in a household environment, it is good too feed the parrots fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, berries, and of course pellet foods.  Pellet foods are a great and necessary addition to any parrot diet because they are made from a wide variety of nutrient dense foods as well as enriched with vitally important vitamins and minerals.

Before any owner decides to raise and care for one or more of these yellow parrots, he/she needs to do the necessary research to understand whet this journey will entail.  The Yellow headed Amazon parrots are some of the longest living of all parrot species.  Many of the can live anywhere from sixty to eighty years.  Such a long commitment requires the right state of mind and preparation.  As long as you approach the situation with eagerness and acceptance, your parrot will prove to be a wonderful addition to your life.
